Today was a fantastic day of racing. ASU put on a spectacular performance on the national stage. All of our boats placed well and will be moving onto finals. The women’s novice 4+ finished their heat in second place and the men’s 2- finished first which automatically qualifies them both for grand finals. Neither of our singles were able to quite make it to grand finals so they moved onto repechage races in the afternoon. Tohid Moosavy raced in Repechage 2, placed fourth, and will move on to the D final. Ethan Curtin raced in Repechage 3, placed second, and will move on to the C final. The breakdown of their racing schedule tomorrow is below.

Event 101 - D Final - Tohid Moosavy - 3:22 p.m. EST

Event 102 - C Final - Ethan Curtin - 3:29 p.m. EST

Those will be our only races tomorrow. The other two boats will both be racing on Sunday morning.

We have safely arrived in Georgia! The team flew into Atlanta Wednesday to prepare for the upcoming races. Lake Lanier—where the course is—is about 2 hours north of Atlanta, so the day was mostly dedicated to travel and rest. One of our amazing teammates, Andrew Spicher, was kind enough to host the team at his house, which was on the way to the venue. Thursday morning we woke up, got breakfast and headed to the course. Our boats had also safely arrived by the time we got there, thanks to UCLA, who trailered for us. We got rigging and all four boats were able to get in about an hour of practice time. It was a beautiful day, but boy was it hot! The temperature was hovering around 95 degrees and humidity made it feel even more intense - but hey, we’re a desert team, thats what we’re used to. We got plenty of pictures and other content throughout the day which can be seen on our Instagram. Tomorrow, our first event, the single, is at noon and our other events are scattered throughout the afternoon. Here’s the breakdown:

Whew. What a weekend! We set some ASU rowing records over the past two days. Four of our boats made it to grand finals - more than ever before. Out of those, we got one silver medal in the men’s 2- and three solid finishes with some spectacular rowing by the women’s N4+, men’s N4+ and men’s V4+. Notable about both the men’s and women’s N4+ is that those boats both were the first-finishing club teams at the entire regatta - the boats that did edge them out of a medal were all varsity programs.

In petit finals on Saturday, (for the boats that didn’t make it to grands) both our men’s N8+ and men’s 2x placed 2nd.

We are headed home now, very tired rowers but very proud of our performance at WIRA Championships. This team has come so far and we have shown just how serious of a competitor we are. Official results and hundreds of pictures will be posted on the website soon.

Had one last full practice this morning - did our best to nail down technique with some race starts and a 3x2k workout. All boats are looking good and there are just one or two minor things that could use a small adjustment. Wednesday’s practice will be a short tech day again trying to iron out those small things but then we will head in early, discuss race plans and de-rig. The trailer is leaving around noon on Thursday and the rest of the team will be flying out Friday. Once the livestream link is posted for the Saturday and Sunday races we will share that so anyone can watch from home.

Last night, the team came together for our end-of-year banquet. One of our benefactors, Michael Bennet, was kind enough to host the event at his beautiful home. Our athletes, and their families and friends were all present for this wonderful event. We had delicious catering, activities and a silent auction. Auction items varied from tickets to the Science Museum to homemade pens crafted by one of our very own rowers - all proceeds went towards the team.

It’s the final countdown and we are putting on the pressure. Our travel arrangements are in order for WIRA: the team will be flying to Sacramento while the coaches take the trailer. Should be a fun 12-hour drive! We will keep you updated on our progress. Coaches just posted our workouts for the week and they look intense. We’ll show you what it looks like in case you want to try it out. Hopefully our competitors aren’t spying and trying to one-up us.

Two weekends ago we traveled to Newport Beach, CA for the Women’s Berg Cup and Men’s Newport Regatta. We surprised people out there from how well we performed - as usual they weren’t expecting a team from the desert to row so well. Our Men’s V4+ placed second in their event, only beat by UC Santa Barbara, and out Men’s N4+ clutched a gold medal victory.
